Today at the Constitution Court in Johannesburg, 6 teams squared up in the World Finals of the Kids' Lit Quiz. Dubbed the "Olympic Games of Reading" the contest required the children to be first to hit a buzzer and answer a series of questions on various themes ranging from "Comics to Movies" to "Characters". The 24 children from South Africa, China, New Zealand and the United Kingdom did battle for the coveted Kids Lit Quiz World Champions' trophy as well as cash and book prizes.

The trophy and first prize went to Bancroft's School from the UK. Second was Belmont Intermediate from New Zealand and third was Grove Primary from SA.

Earlier the children had sat under the wire branches and leaves in the foyer of the court, listening to one of Africa's great story tellers, Gcina Mhlope. They were later treated to a personal story of Chris van Wyk, who related his childhood realisation that his grandmother could not read and the ensuing sadness that people were robbed of such a fundamental pleasure through illiteracy. During lunch, the contestants met John van der Ruit and lined up to get their copies of the "Spud" series signed.
