The 2009 Kids' Lit Quiz World Final took place in Johannesburg, South Africa on 3rd August. The champions were Bancroft's School, UK.
The trophy and first prize went to Bancroft's School from the UK. Second was Belmont Intermediate from New Zealand and third was Grove Primary from SA. Earlier the children had sat under the wire branches and leaves in the foyer of the court, listening to one of Africa's great story tellers, Gcina Mhlope. They were later treated to a personal story of Chris van Wyk, who related his childhood realisation that his grandmother could not read and the ensuing sadness that people were robbed of such a fundamental pleasure through illiteracy. During lunch, the contestants met John van der Ruit and lined up to get their copies of the "Spud" series signed. |
